Local SEO for UK Tradespeople: A Practical Guide

When a customer needs a plumber, electrician, cleaner or builder, they often search online and contact one of the businesses that clearly offers the right service in their area. Local SEO helps customers find your business, understand what you do and get in touch.

Start with accurate information and useful pages. You do not need dozens of nearly identical town pages to make progress.

1. Choose the services you want to promote

List the jobs you most want enquiries for. A plumber might choose boiler repairs, bathroom installations and emergency call-outs. These are different customer needs, so each may benefit from its own service page.

Each page should explain what work you carry out, who it is for, where you provide it, how booking works and how to request a quote. Use clear language that your customers would use when searching.

2. Explain where you genuinely work

Show the towns and districts where you actually accept jobs. If your availability or response time differs by area, explain that clearly.

Only create a separate location page when you can provide useful information specific to that area. Repeating the same text while changing the town name does little to help a potential customer.

3. Check your business information

Make sure your business name, phone number, opening hours and website details are accurate. Your contact page should be easy to find, and every important service page should give visitors a clear way to enquire.

If your business is eligible for a Google Business Profile, review its categories, services, hours, photos and website link. The information should accurately describe your real business and match your website.

4. Give customers reasons to trust you

Show relevant examples of your work, explain your process and display genuine customer reviews where you have permission. Include qualifications or accreditations when they apply to the service.

Check your website on a mobile phone. Visitors should be able to read the page, tap your phone number and submit an enquiry without difficulty.

5. Measure enquiries as well as search visibility

Google Search Console can show which pages and search queries bring visibility to your website. Combine that information with website analytics and your enquiry records to see which pages lead to calls or form submissions.

If a page appears in searches but gets few visits, review its title and description. If people visit but do not contact you, check whether the page answers their questions and makes the next step obvious.

Your local SEO starting checklist

  1. Choose three priority services.
  2. Give each service a clear, useful page.
  3. Confirm your contact details and genuine coverage areas.
  4. Review your Google Business Profile if your business is eligible.
  5. Test your website and enquiry form on a phone.
  6. Track calls and form enquiries from your website.

Begin with the pages and details that matter most to your customers. Measure the enquiries they produce, then keep improving them.
